Four in four: the things you didn’t know about the IoIC – until now.

Episode 4 of The Internal Comms Podcast features guest Jennifer Sproul, chief executive of the Institute of Internal Communication.

The IoIC is the voice of the IC community, giving credibility to practitioners across the UK. As Jennifer explains to Katie Macaulay: ‘[The IoIC] give you designation, so you can say: “I have been validated and judged as a knowledgeable professional. Therefore, you can trust me.”’

There can’t be many people working in internal communications who haven’t heard about the IoIC. But with its 70th anniversary coming up, Jennifer shared a few lesser-known things about the institute’s past and future.

#1
The IoIC was founded by 50 journalists working in London in 1949. It was known as the British Association of Industrial Editors.

#2
The group primarily worked on ‘house journals’. At the time, these publications were known to be ‘cheerfully amateur’. So the founders wanted to bring a level of expertise to the profession.

#3
Seventy years on, Jennifer says the IoIC has ‘found its gravitas’. It will soon be launching a new purpose – positioning internal communications as not just good for business, but societal wellbeing.

#4
The IoIC is educating the next generation of internal communications professionals through FutureNet – a network dedicated to anybody who’s been in IC for less than three years.
